Art

I use crowds, shadows and the miniature to communicate my belief in the interconnectedness and power of people. In the words of Gaston Bachelard, ‘Miniature is one of the refuges of greatness.’ Through the use of miniaturization, viewing large scenes on a small scale, I aim to stimulate the audience’s imagination to think on grand scales and of universal energies that take us beyond the realms of the individual and individual thought. I wish to impress on the viewer how crowds generate powerful energy through their strength in number and their assembly for a common purpose. This metaphysical energy is expressed in my work through the use of light and shadow.

The 'Crowd' series is my most recent installation work. 'Crowd' was created by individually cutting out over 1000 tiny paper people. Below are images of pieces that have been exhibited in many different ways and also experiments that I have done with the piece. I like to show the developmental stages for everyone to understand where it has originated from and where it could be taken.‘Miniature is an exercise that has metaphysical freshness; it allows us to be world conscious at slight risk. And how restful this exercise on a dominated world can be! For miniature rests us without ever putting us to sleep. Here the imagination is both vigilant and content.’ Gaston Bachelard.

My 'Ballerina' work and other kinetic glue figures were my first ventures into installation, below are some images and films of these works in their priliminary stages.
Please excuse the loading time of the films, they will soon be streamed, but at the moment they take a few minutes to load.
Some Writing...
A concern for what is natural and what is cultural is central to my work. Through comparing formations in nature and symbols in culture as visual language, I aim to form shapes with my multitudes of small paper people that may resonate in the viewer, suggesting similarities within any assembly from birds in flight to football crowds to social / political demonstrations. My work is a product of my belief and observations that there is a need for greater awareness, visibility and communion within our society and I aim for the use of the miniature to mirror the workings of the imagination, so the art communicates on a deep level with the viewer.
